2010 Youth Summer Sailing Programs

Eligibility: The Summer Sailing Program is open to all students ages 6 to 13 (currently attending 8th grade). Students ages 6-8 will be assigned to the Junior morning program.

Program Tuition: The cost of each two-week program is $365 per student.  Financial aid is available. No Refunds.

Program Notes:

  • Classes will be tailored to fit the needs of the students enrolled.
  • Students will be grouped based upon their sailing ability.
  • Morning weather usually offers lighter winds and calmer seas more suitable for beginner sailors.
  • Students must pass a basic swimming test on the first day of class.

Schedule:

Morning Program: – 8:30 AM -11:30 AM  (Sessions 1, 2 & 3)

  • The morning programs are designed for beginner sailors with little or no sailing experience or for sailors who need to build confidence in their sailing ability.
  • The morning programs are designed to teach basic sailing nomenclature, safety rules and will consist of daily shore lessons and on the water instruction.
  • Sailors ages 6- 8 will be assigned to the Junior morning program.

Afternoon Program: 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM: Sessions 1, 2 & 3

  • Students in the afternoon programs must have some sailing experience, knowledge of basic sailing nomenclature and safety rules along with confidence to crew or skipper.

Race Skills Program: 12:30 PM to 3:30 PM: Session 3 only

  • This afternoon program is designed to teach the experienced sailors racing rules, safety, skills and strategies as well as to foster team work between skipper & crew.
  • Note the availability of the race skills program will depend upon sufficient interested enrollment, otherwise it will be replaced by a regular afternoon program.

Session 1: July 5 through July 16

Session 2: July 19 through July 30

Session 3: August 2 through August 13

Adult Sailing Program Starts in June, Classes in July!

Private lessons:

  • Start in June
  • By appointment only (subject to availability of instructors & boats)
  • $60 per hour for first two people
  • 2 hour minimum
  • $10 hour each additional person
  • Maximum 4 people

Adult Classes:

  • Start in July (dates to be announced)
  • Tuesdays & Thursdays 5:30 to 7:30 for 3 weeks
  • $325 per student

Boat rentals*:

  • $200 first 3 hours
  • $300 full day
  • Only MattSail Members may rent boats.
  • Member must be checked out on any boat rented, and must prove competency as skipper.

2009 Youth Summer Programs

The William E. Mee Youth Sailing Program, Mattsail’s first and flagship, is designed to hook student’s interest when they are young, and create lifelong sailors and learners.

This outline represents the intention of the head instructor and MattSail board; however, classes and staff are designed to be flexible and adaptable. Classes are tailored to fit the needs of the students enrolled. It should be noted that morning weather usually offers light winds and calm seas, lending them best to beginner sailors, the junior program (6-8) is only offered in the AM sessions.

Morning Session:

The morning sessions will be designed for youngster with little or no sailing experience. These sessions will also be for sailors who need to build confidence in their sailing ability. This session will consist of the following, basic sailing nomenclature, safety rules, daily shore lesson and on the water instruction. Morning sessions include a Junior Program for students age 6- 8 who will sail Opti class dinghies.

Afternoon Session:

The students in the afternoon session must have some sailing experience along with confidence in themselves to crew or skipper. These students should have knowledge of all morning session subjects

Afternoon Session: Advanced

These afternoon session will be designed for the advance sailor to teach them the sailing skills of racing. These session will include learning the rules of racing along with racing strategies, starts, team work between shipper & crew and safety.
